Designing for Rotational Lining

Written by RMB Products | Oct 28, 2019 5:39:00 PM

Rotational lining is a robust process that can handle a large variety of pipe and vessels. However, as with any process, there are certain criteria that must be taken into consideration before rotationally lining a pipe or vessel.

Below are some guidelines to follow when designing a part for this process. As always, if you have questions about the compatibility of your drawings, or would like our engineers to assist with the design, please contact us.

If you wish to supply your own pipe, fittings, or vessels, please note that we require the following inspections to be performed by you, the customer, before shipping to our facility.

Please ensure that the pipe, fitting, or vessel is designed and inspected for the following:

• Material: The pipe or vessel is metallic and able to withstand temperatures from 400°F – 800°F.

• Dimensions: Typically, the minimum diameter is at least 1.5” to line with fluoropolymers and 2” diameter to line with HDPE.* Parts must fit inside of the oven envelope to be lined. There are two sizes that the pipe or vessel cannot exceed. The first is a 12’ spherical envelope. The second is 20’ long up to a NPS of 42”.

• Inside edge of pipe: Broken with a generous radius of at least 3/16”.

• Flanges: Minimum 3/16” corner radius on the ID.

• Design: Enough access to all internal parts of the pipe or vessel is required for manual sandblasting.

• Welds: Free of undercutting, surface porosities, weld spatters, and consistently smooth.

• Inside surface of root welds: Ground smooth with no protruding sharp edges.

* In certain situations, the vessel could be lined with a diameter as low as 1”. Please contact your sales representative for details.

Lastly, the rotolining process will not produce a perfect uniform lining thickness. We will put a minimum acceptable thickness on the liner and ensure it meets your specifications. Part configuration (nozzles, flange sizes, and external attachments, etc.) can greatly affect the thickness of the liner. For this reason, we do not put a maximum tolerance on lining thickness, but if this is a requirement, please contact us to discuss your project.
