Quality at the Source, or QATS, is the lean manufacturing concept that measures quality at every step of the manufacturing process, rather than waiting until the last step to do a quality check.
This is typically accomplished by creating standardized work, such as documenting work methods, materials, and tools. Employees “raise their hand” when something is wrong, and the improvement focus is placed on the process itself, rather than the person carrying out the task. There are successive checks done during the flow of work to ensure that something wasn’t missed in a previous step.
At RMB, we implement the principles of Quality at the Source in everything we do. By training our employees to use standardized work and detect issues during each process step, we deliver a better product to our customers, reduce waste and operational costs, and empower our employees to make decisions that have a positive impact on the company.
